Teach for the Health of It Program Summary - Healthcare Industry Initiative

   

Overview

  • Purpose of grant is to increase nursing program faculty in Maryland Nursing programs.

  • Classroom or clinical program faculty are both appropriate.

  • The Teach for the Health of It program is funded for $800,000 over two years for 40 or more qualified Registered Nurses to move into faculty teaching positions and to aid nursing students to complete their degree.

  • Program has 2 components: nursing faculty component and succession planning component.

  • Applications can be made by partnerships of at least one healthcare provider institution and at least one educational institution.

Nursing Faculty Component

  • Healthcare employer releases a Master’s prepared Registered Nurse to teach.

  • Up to $10,000 is available for this nurse to obtain any additional credentials needed.

  • Partnerships will create a MOU that defines parameters.

  • New faculty member remains on healthcare employer payroll and collects the same wage and benefits.

  • Educational institution pays healthcare employer what it would normally have paid faculty member.

  • Alternative approaches developed by partnerships will be considered.

Succession Planning Component

  • Intended to aid students in completing their education credential as quickly as possible.

  • Scholarships of up to $10,000 per student are available to educational institution for students’ tuition.

  • Students may or may not be employees of healthcare provider institution.

  • Students may be in entry-level non-traditional programs, BSN, graduate, or education certificate programs.

  • Priority to students receiving MSN in nursing with emphasis in education so that the students are qualified to teach in the future.

Application submission

Priority is given to:

  • Increasing nursing faculty as quickly as possible - HIGHEST PRIORITY

  • Creative proposals

  • Sustaining the project after funding period is complete

  • Geographic distribution
