Wayne T. Hockmeyer, Ph.D. founded
MedImmune, Inc., now the fifth largest biotechnology company in the world, in April 1988 as president and chief executive officer. He was elected to serve on the Board of Directors in May 1988 and became chairman of the board of directors in May 1993. Dr. Hockmeyer relinquished his position as CEO in October 2000 and now serves as the chairman of the board of directors and president of MedImmune Ventures, Inc.
Prior to founding MedImmune he served as a commissioned
officer in the United States Army from 1966-1986,
receiving a number of individual military awards. From
1980 to 1986 he was chairman of the Department of
Immunology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of
Research. In 1986, Dr. Hockmeyer joined Praxis Biologics
as Vice President of Research and Development and was
there until founding MedImmune, Inc. in 1988. He has
been recognized nationally for his research on malaria
vaccines, and is the 2004 CEO of the Year for the School
of Business at The George Washington University. He has
a Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University and his
Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
